Why consume a sports drink?

What is well established in the literature is that carbohydrate intake during exercise can delay fatigue and improve performance during prolonged exercise or exercise of short duration but of greater intensity (e.g. continuous exercise lasting more than an hour or intermittent high-intensity exercise). Thus the sports drink provides carbohydrates which help maintain energy levels.
